The Governor announced the move in an effort to limit the further spread of COVID-19. According to published reports, the directive will be enforced by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH). Exemptions to the policy apply to people who are exercising, eating or drinking, and those with health conditions for whom mask wearing would be difficult. From the Virginia Consumer Health Care Alliance Team

Virginia’s  Governor Ralph Northam and members of his Administration outlined  a plan to gradually re-open Virginia's economy. The plan entails three detailed phases describing what the Commonwealth's families and businesses can expect in the near future.  Virginia extended business closures until Friday, May 15. At that time, the administration began "Phase One" of the Forward Virginia re-opening plan. The formal start of Phase One was dependent on data showing a downward trend in positive COVID-19 cases statewide. You can find more information on the three phases of re-opening here.

(July 1, 2020)   The Commonwealth of Virginia is tied second among states in overall emergency preparedness rating in the recently released 2020 National Health Security Preparedness Index report from the Robert Wood Johnson for Foundation and the Colorado School of Public Health. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the dedicated professional caregivers working in hospitals and health systems across Virginia have cared for thousands of patients stricken with the novel coronavirus, and in partnership with government officials and the broader health care community, have been immersed in the strategic coordination and response to this unfolding situation. Virginia’s effective response to the public health threat posed by COVID-19 is a testament to the intense, ongoing emergency preparation efforts of hospitals and other stakeholders. This is the second such national report to be released in recent months showing that Virginia’s emergency preparedness infrastructure compares favorably to its peer states across the nation. In the Trust for America’s Health – Ready or Not 2020 Annual Report on Emergency Preparedness, Virginia is among the states rated in the highest tier for emergency preparation. A full news can be read online here.

(July 1, 2020)  Governor Northam’s COVID-19 Testing Advisory Council has endorsed a set of statewide COVID-19 testing guidelines and a testing algorithm. The COVID-19 Testing Guidance for Healthcare Providers can be accessed on the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) website here. The testing algorithm can be accessed online here. Virginia health care providers, clinicians, practitioners, caregivers, and stakeholders are encouraged to share this information within their organizations and communities.

(June 17, 2020) VDH encourages Virginians to use the COVIDCheck online health assessment tool recently deployed by the Commonwealth to help people determine if they may need to seek in-person medical care related to the coronavirus. This handy online tool is an effective way to help individuals determine whether they might need clinical care.

VHHA has added a “discharge” category to the COVID-19 online data dashboard. The dashboard, produced with the support of VHHA member hospitals and health systems, provides up-to-date statistics on the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations across the Commonwealth, ventilator usage, current hospital bed availability, and metrics on the number of hospitals experiencing challenges obtaining or replenishing critical inventories of PPE and other needed medical supplies.

VHHA also maintains a COVID-19 webpage with resources, documents, video content, and more.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently announced new guidance on COVID-19 testing data reporting requirements to include demographic data such as race, ethnicity, age, and gender. Read the revised guidance here and an FAQ document here.
