VAHPC Public Policy Agenda 2010

Access to hospice and palliative care for all individuals and families in need of services

  • Support legislation and public policies that assure that patients and their significant others have access to information on hospice and palliative care in a caring, sensitive, evidence-based manner.
  • Continue to support the promotion of private health insurance regulations that include hospice as an insurance benefit.
  • Support Medicaid plans that include hospice and adequate compensation for hospice and palliative care services.
  • Support initiatives to improve access to care, including symptom management, prescription medications, effective complimentary treatment modalities, bereavement services, and care coordination.
  • Work to assure that VAHPC members are represented in public policy arenas where decisions are made on access to hospice and palliative care.
 
Quality and safety of hospice and palliative care
 
  • Support initiatives to improve quality and safety in patient care
  • Encourage and support public education regarding the legitimate use and misuse of medications, including disposal of unused medications.
Hospice and palliative care operations and services
 
  • Monitor legislation and/or regulations that have a potential impact on hospice program operations.
  • Develop and implement strategies aimed at increasing the relationship between hospice and palliative care providers and policymakers.
 
 

 

Use of the name Hospice

The Virginia Department of Health has issued guidance on the use of the name hospice by agencies providing care. The following link will resolve any confusion the public may encounter when making appropriate choices for care and services for loved ones
